This photograph, titled "Masking Depression", makes a powerful statement. It shows the classic story of putting up a facade using a fake smile to hide the frown. I believe it was the photographer's intention to make this photo look dark, to match the depression and hiding being shown. To me, this image shows the easiness of putting up a fake smile, and how if you simply paste on a smile, everybody takes that as you being okay. I believe there are a number of people who walk around in their day-to-day lives that are suffering from depression, or struggling with something private, and continue going on as if they are happy or even just fine.
Even with her smudged makeup and messy hair, most people would shrug it off if she told them "I'm fine". I'm fine is, in my opinion, one of the biggest white lies told, and perhaps one told the most often. It typically means that someone is not good, and they are trying to hide it, or they are simply fine, and are not good, but nothing is horribly wrong.
The fact that her smile is paper means it could easily be torn away, yet nobody cares enough to do so.
